Egypt University of Informatics (EUI) has won an EGP 3 million grant from the Science, Technology, and Innovation Funding Authority (STDF) for Maestro Egypt, the first Egyptian smart planning engine for traffic systems, developed to support cities and urban communities nationwide.
Built on multi-agent AI, the system lets users design, analyze, and refine current and future mobility scenarios, supporting national efforts to improve traffic in Greater Cairo, Alexandria, and along major corridors such as the North Coast, Ain Sokhna, and Suez roads. It is designed for use by transport and road network officials, including local government units, as well as engineers and researchers, giving them a tool to improve network efficiency, reduce congestion and emissions, and build a comprehensive urban mobility database aligned with Egyptian standards.
The project also covers planning for public transport networks, introducing new systems or upgrading existing ones to cut citizens' travel distances, and generating urban planning recommendations, from new or modified routes to necessary road expansions.
For each proposed solution, a road expansion, a bridge, a tunnel, or an added lane, Maestro Egypt calculates the economic cost, helping planners weigh cost against real impact on traffic flow, with Egypt's actual driving patterns factored in.
The research team is also studying ways to ease congestion on specific corridors, including turning some areas into pedestrian-only zones and assessing the impact on surrounding neighborhoods.
The grant reflects EUI's research efforts in artificial intelligence and its applications, and affirms the university's capacity to deliver technical solutions that serve vital sectors of the state, in line with the goals of Egypt's Vision 2030.
