Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA)’s Women Committee organised a three-day awareness campaign at its head office at Al Quoz and Al Warsan, in partnership with the Dubai Pink Ride Campaign and Dubai Health Authority (DHA). The campaign raises awareness among DEWA’s female employees on breast cancer and encourages them to undergo screening for early detection of the disease. This is part of DEWA’s efforts to support community initiatives and enhance its social, economic, educational and healthy role.
More than 100 female employees underwent medical examinations during the event. The event also included a lecture by specialists from the Pink Caravan and DHA. Participants got educational leaflets on the disease, its causes, and how to conduct periodic examinations. The event also provided free mammogram and other medical tests.
“DEWA supports the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to achieve the Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a home for educated, cultured and healthy individuals. DEWA is keen to ensure the happiness, good health and well-being of its female employees. This helps them balance their personal and practical lives, adopt healthy lifestyles, and consider sports as a lifestyle. This is positively reflected on their professional roles and also personal life outside DEWA, so they are better able to take care of the youth, and actively participate in social development. The activities at the open health day are especially important as they are associated with health, which is one of the most fundamental factors for individuals and their ability to develop. Such events instil a healthy culture amongst female employees, establish the foundations of awareness and knowledge, and ensure a healthy and safe environment,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“As a socially responsible organisation, DEWA’s Women Committee supports female employees. We collaborate every year with public and private organisations to educate women in the workforce by providing medical tips and periodical examinations, to achieve social and health stability of the family and society,” added Al Tayer.
“DEWA interacts annually with the national awareness campaign for breast cancer in the UAE. It also participates effectively in this noble humanitarian cause of promoting awareness on periodic screening for early detection to enhance recovery opportunities. DEWA Women’s Committee spreads awareness and hope by encouraging female employees to adopt a healthy lifestyle through nutrition and exercise. DEWA has a track record of great health awareness initiatives to empower and support women as part of a comprehensive development vision,” said Aysha Al Asam, Vice Chairperson of DEWA Women’s Committee.
The Pink Caravan is part of the Friends of Cancer Patients initiative which raises awareness on other chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, as well as health problems related to nutrition and skin, in partnership with DEWA’s Health and Safety department. DEWA Women’s Committee organises these open health days for its female employees in conjunction with several international health occasions, including the Breast Cancer Awareness Month, in October every year; World Diabetes Day on 14 November; and World Heart Day, on 28 September.
