The winners of 2021’s GLOMO Awards were announced today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, with Huawei taking the gong for Best Mobile Innovation for Emerging Markets.
The Chinese vendor has won the title previously for its RuralStar Pro connectivity and digital inclusion solution, and this year proved another triumph as the latest iteration yet again proved the most practical solution for addressing the digital divide in emerging markets – winning out against innovative products from CalAmp, Dialog Axiata and Samsung.
RuralStar Pro is aimed at delivering internet connectivity in low- and middle-income regions to increase digital and financial inclusion. It offers integrated access and backhaul, and is both simple to install and powered by solar energy, allowing providers to offer coverage in remote areas at a very low total cost of ownership – so its advantages in emerging markets are self-evident.
The GLOMO Awards are always a bright spot at Mobile World Congress, but particularly this year, where Covid restrictions have forced a more subdued atmosphere at the traditionally bustling event. While it certainly feels odd not to be reporting from Barcelona, it’s reassuring to see some MWC traditions continuing unabated!
