Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat witnessed the signing of an agreement between the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) regarding Egypt's hosting of the 2023 Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) conference during the second half of 2023 in Sharm El-Sheikh.
The agreement was signed by Eng. Hossam El-Gamal, CEO of the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, and Doreen Bogdan Martin, Director of the Development Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union.
It is scheduled to participate in the Global Symposium for Telecommunication Regulators, a group of leaders and heads of telecommunication regulatory agencies and authorities from different countries of the world, a large number of specialized experts from more than 70 countries, and a group of the most prominent decision-makers in this field, in addition to representatives of local and international companies, to exchange Their views and experiences on regulatory issues and developments related to the global telecommunications sector and the study of the best regulatory practices applied at the international level.

For his part, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat confirmed that Egypt's hosting of this global event in Sharm El-Sheikh next year comes within the framework of Egypt's interest in building bridges of cooperation with international organizations and various countries in the field of communications and information technology, especially since it is one of the most prominent international forums organized by the International Federation. For telecoms in order to open a global dialogue that brings together telecom regulators and industry leaders around the world to discuss the most important issues that concern the telecommunications sector, explaining that this hosting is an affirmation of Egypt’s leading role at the international level in the field of telecommunications regulation, and it also comes in line with the state’s vision for Egypt to become a center For international events and a meeting point for the exchange of regional and international experiences.
Dr. Amr Talaat indicated Egypt's keenness to mobilize efforts and harness all possibilities to ensure that this global event emerges in a manner that befits Egypt's position and leadership.
Advance Communications Organizational Performance Index
For his part, Eng. Hossam El-Gamal explained that the signing of the agreement to host Egypt for the World Telecommunication Regulators Symposium 2023 is an important step and a reflection of the international community’s confidence in Egypt’s capabilities to host such important international events, and to complement the series of steps taken by the NTRA to strengthen Egypt’s international center in the field of telecommunications regulation. The device is a set of regulatory measures and effective steps, which resulted in Egypt progressing 54 international centers to get 41st place in the ITU Regulatory Performance Index for the year 2020 issued by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and progressing 43 international centers and obtaining 36th place in the mobile phone electronic wallets regulatory index. Issued by the International Association of Mobile Networks GSMA for the year 2020, as well as obtaining the 23rd place internationally in the International Cybersecurity Index in 2019.
Active participation in the activities and works of the Federation
It is worth noting that Egypt is one of the oldest member states of the International Telecommunication Union, as it has been a member of the ITU Council since its formation in 1973. It actively participates in the activities and work of the International Telecommunication Union on several axes. It is a member of the Radio Regulations Board, in addition to chairing study groups and working groups. Egypt has been a center for launching many international events for the International Telecommunication Union such as the Global Symposium for Telecommunication Regulators GSR-16 in Sharm El-Sheikh in 2016, the Global Initiative for Financial Inclusion FIGI-19 in Cairo in 2019, and the Radiocommunication Association RA for the World Radiocommunication Conference WRC19 in Sharm El Sheikh in 2019.
It is worth mentioning that the International Telecommunication Union is one of the most important United Nations agencies specialized in information and communication technologies, with its headquarters in the Swiss city of Geneva, and its membership consists of 193 countries and more than 900 members and partners from different sectors. The Union's role is focused on creating the conditions for achieving growth and sustainable development in information and communication technology worldwide.
